Artist Statement
I like to work extemporaneously and in the abstract. Bright colors tend to excite me, as well as geometry and asymmetry. I typically work in the moment, working with paints and dyes on fabric, creating serendipitous designs. The simple line of a geometric shape, the blast of a colorful line, or the contrast of black against white makes my canvas sing.
My tools of choice include fabric reactive dyes, paints, and a host of threads. I use artist created thermofax screens and stencils, paints, inks and dyes to detail my designs.
I believe in giving back to the art community, and because of this, I have donated my time and works of art for fund raising causes to the following organizations: Austin Fiber Arts, Austin Area Quilt Guild, International Quilt Association, Studio Art Quilt Associates, Surface Design Association and the Austin Modern Quilt Guild.
I realize that I have many experiences yet to encounter, many dyes and paints to explore, and many yards of fabric to tangle with. I hope my abstract art provokes the viewer and brings a smile to your face.
At this time, she considers herself a ‘fiber artist’, working with art quilts, collage and surface design.
Biography
Sherri Lipman McCauley is educated as a teacher, trained as a programmer, and has emerged as an artist, creating serendipitous fiber designs.
Watching her mother sew clothing for her sister and self was a big part of her childhood. For her ‘sweet sixteen’, she received a sewing machine. As the years went on, she learned to sew and quilt, making clothing to wear as a teenager. As an adult, she picked up quilting and continued to create wearables.
Being a member of the Austin Art Group and creating group art quilts together, has generated a synergy and growth in McCauley’s work.
After attending a host of different technique classes, McCauley found her niche in the art cloth community. Her greatest influences have come from classes with Jane Dunnewold, Kerr Grabowski, and Sherrill Kahn.
In 2013, McCauley’s pieces were included in the Austin Fiber Artists’ juried shows at Tokyo Electronics and the Daugherty Arts Center in Austin, Texas. She was also part of the 2013 Surface Design Association Member Show in San Antonio, Texas. In 2014, McCauley’s pieces were included in the Austin Fiber Artists’ juried show at the Austin Bergstrom International Airport and the Texas Federation of Fiber Artists’ juried exhibit at the Austin Area Quilt Show.
McCauley recently completed studying with Jane Dunnewold in her Art Cloth Mastery Program. The Twelve Voices from One Exhibit at the 2014 International Quilt Association Quilt Show in Houston, Texas is the culmination of this course of study.
